Things I Learned from the RustyCam

You may have noticed a new thing in the "Features" box. It's the RustyCam, beaming to you live from my secret underground lair in Washington DC. It's been up for a day now, and I've learned a few key facts that I'd like to share.

1) I'm not very interesting to watch, except when I do this.

2) I tend to sit very still for quite long periods of time. See #1.

3) Everyone wants to see the damn cat.

4) I need a haircut. Rusty's hair has recently changed, and he seems to have been replaced with an alternate dimension Rusty (evil). Think Spock + Goatee evil.(Inoshiro)

5) Despite being as action-packed as mold, if you put a live picture of yourself on the web, people will feel compelled to watch it.

So watch. You know you want to.

You cannot look away. Even for a second. I might move.

Dylan (Inoshiro) here.. making this page more interesting until Rusty gets his camera setup again :)

Oh yeah, and you can discuss below, if you'd like.

I for one believe that the cat should be filmed when Rusty is not at the computer. Better yet, how about a PenwiperCam, strapped to the head of the cat.

Hey-- where were you when I was on camera at 3:00AM?

Funny thing, I was woken up at the crack of noon today by a realtor and some random termite guy coming in to check the house for termites. And this has happened before. I always wonder what these people think when they come into my house at noon and I'm still asleep.

You're right - you do need a haircut, and maybe a shave, too! If you would smile, you would be more interesting to watch. How about a shot of the cat?

I shaved this morning! And there will be no more pictures of the cat. Ever.

You and your crazy pop culture references. Who is Omar? and why is his mom cool?!

I'll have you know that you sparked quite the intense web search on my part. I considered such possibilities as
Single Mom by Omar Tyree
This guy, and his mom.

However, I'm really hoping that it's a reference to this book.

[ Parent ]

Ha! (none / 0) (#43)
by rusty on Fri Mar 10, 2000 at 04:20:26 PM EST

That's funny. Actually, that's not a pop-culture reference at all, although I encourage you to adopt "Omar's Mom" as the standard superlative example of all negative mom comments. Recommended usage:

"Your mom's so ugly she stops sundials"
"Yeah, well at least she's not as ugly as Omar's mom."

Actually the Omar in question is a friend of mine and JDogg's, and a former co-worker of mine, although I actually didn't know him when we worked together. He has a homepage, but I'm not gonna tell you where it is. :-)

Whenever mom jokes would be made, someone would turn the insult into an Omar's Mom joke, which everyone seems to be able to agree is the logical conclusion to the matter. My theory is it's because most of us have never met Omar's mom, and Omar is your basic nice guy, so somehow making fun of his mom defuses any potential anger that an escalating series of mom jokes might otherwise provoke.

Omar is friends with Jenni, and lives in suburban MD. I don't know what his mom does, or where she lives, but her glasses are so thick, when she looks at a map, she can see people waving at her. ;-)

by hattig on Tue Feb 22, 2000 at 12:51:07 PM EST

What is your favourite drink whilst you are working on Kuro5hin?

I want to see this cat everybody is talking about. Maybe you could get a wireless camera and attach it to the cat so people could see a video of a cat slowly running around the house...

No crotchcam please. Keyboard cam is okay though. :-)

Re: Things I Learned from the RustyCam (5.00 / 1) (#28)
by rusty on Tue Feb 22, 2000 at 02:49:11 PM EST

My favorite drink while working on kuro5hin is lemonade (Country Time yellow powdered, which we buy in 2 lb. cans which last about 2 weeks). Whenever you see me drinking from one of those huge plastic mugs, that's likely what it is. Sorry, I'm not much of a drinker, and alcohol totally kills my programming abilities. :-)

My favorite snack is Flavor-Ice brand frozen confections. They're those little plastic tubes of sugary liquid, that you freeze yourself. Mmmm. Freezee pops. I buy those in hundred-count cases, several at a time. I have to stock up, cause sometimes they're scarce.

The crotchcam is not in the works. I actually have a wireless cam, but it does need to be plugged into the wall, so it wouldn't work as a cat-cam. Anyway, if we strapped a cam onto the cat, you'd all see that he spends all day sleeping in my bureau drawer. Maybe I'll grab some shots of him and post them so you all can see what he looks like. It's just an ordinary black housecat, anyway. He looks exactly like you'd think he looks.

by shepd on Wed Feb 23, 2000 at 09:50:55 PM EST

Country Time! You can get that powdered? I love that stuff, but here I can only find it in cans in vending machines. That makes it mighty expensive. And Freezies (IcePops) are great too. Jeez, do you like ketchup chips, beef jerky, and that cheap stew in a can that looks and smells like dog food (here it's made by Puritan) by any chance? What about those donuts you find in the vending machines... mmmmmm... sugared preservative glazed is the best (only) flavour.

And don't get me started about CornNuts. All the flavours are good.

And sweetarts.... ahhhhhh.... If it comes from a vending machine, it must be good. And the chicken soup from the hot drinks machine, nothing tastes better.

I gotta stop talking about food. I'm getting too hungry!

I've only met one other person who enjoys those things as much as me. I was surprised he was still living... :-)

by rusty on Thu Feb 24, 2000 at 12:16:15 AM EST

Country Time! You can get that powdered?

Oh yeah. In these enormous 5 lb (I just checked) cans that make 32 Quarts. Like I said, we drink that amount in about 2 weeks. Good Lord, that means I average 8 quarts of lemonade a week. That's just disturbing.

Jeez, do you like ketchup chips, beef jerky, and that cheap stew in a can that looks and smells like dog food

Good Lord, man, have you no standards!! Ok, I like beef jerky, but only the really flabby squishy kind. Not the dry stuff. And that stew isn't so bad (Dinty Moore), and has the great advantage that it can be heated inside the can, using nearly any heat-producing thing. Or eaten cold, if the situation warrants, with no (abnormally) harmful effects.

As for those donuts, here's a trade secret for ya. Normally, I hate the things. But try this-- get some of the "old-fashioned" kind, the ones that are just ungarnished cake donuts. Then, pop them in a nearby microwave for 15-20 seconds (not too long, or the chemicals will burn!). THEN (this is the important part) when they're all warm and squishy, press them down in a plate full of normal crystalline sugar. Make sure you get both sides, and roll to get the edges. Eat immediately, while still hot. Mmmmmm. Absolutely heavenly. I could eat a whole dozen of these things.

Otherwise, I mostly stick to red meat and coffee. :-)

Re: Things I Learned from the RustyCam (none / 0) (#30)
by rusty on Wed Feb 23, 2000 at 12:11:22 PM EST

Well, I woke up this morning and discovered the server was fscked beyond all belief. Sorry for the downtime everyone. I don't know what the hell happened, but I had to reboot. I was basically out of memory from about a billion defunct httpd and mysqld processes. Ouch. I suspect it might have been my fault, but I'll be keeping a close eye on it for a while.

Um, the sweatshifrt is just my normal "just got up bed-head-covering" fleece. It's not as dark as it looks in here-- this camera just sucks.

The cam here is an X10 wireless cam. The one at work came with the Hauppaugge WinTV capture card-- it's just a color CCD camera. Actually I've had no trouble whatsoever getting the cams to work. The WinTV was fantastically easy to set up-- just modprobe a couple things, and it worked.

Did it look like this? If so, it's a lovely 32 oz. plastic mug from The Green Leafe. The prenominal bar at my college sold these huge mugs (of course we knew all the employees, so ours were free), and then every sunday you could bring your mug down there and they'd fill it up, on the cheap. Guiness was four bucks (for two pints). So pretty good deal. And the mugs have since proven to be useful for holding the obscene quantities of fine Country Time Powdered Lemonade which I consume, as well as copious ice to crunch on (a habit that drives my girlfriend nuts).

You should do a writeup of "being netless"... I know that if I were netless, the world would almost grind to a screeching halt. You might even be able to make references to blade runner or "becoming dependent on the matrix" or something ;^)=

Well, no, but how old is Leo DiCaprio? Weren't they considering him too?

Perhaps "adolescent" was the wrong word...

Sorry if I offended you, I just kinda thought you had those future-Lord-of-the-Sith type qualities. Clouded with this one the future is, yes, hmmm?

I wasn't offended. I get told I look young all the time. And then you said I had future-Lord-of-Sith qualities, so even if I had been offended, all would be forgiven. I mean, what could possibly be cooler than that. :-)

There were a couple days last week where it seemed like every article and half the comments mentioned /. one way or another. I delared a moratorium, cause it was getting annoying. Oddly enough, it seems to have worked, as I haven't seen mention of TOS ("that other site") since then. Weird, eh?

Re: What do you use? (none / 0) (#75)

It's a package dealie by Hauppaugge-- comes with the vid capture card and a little camera. I also have a wireless X10 camera, but A) It's not actually wireless, and B) The image quality sucks. The Hauppaugge rocks though-- search on Pricewatch for "WinTV", and probably one of the results will be the bundle deal. Oh yeah, the xawtv package includes the little program that handles grabbing frames and uploading them to the server.

First, Rusty had long-ish hair that made him look skateboard prone.

Then Rusty whacked it short and took to wearing pinstripe shirts, aging him 20 years in 20 minutes.

Finally, he got his new trendy haircut which reminded me of Evil Spock, causing yet another update to his point about haircuts by myself >:-)

All news and no Rusty make Animol a dull boy... (none / 0) (#87)
by Animol on Fri Jun 30, 2000 at 02:37:28 PM EST

Well, it just pains my heart thoroughly! I happen to be a reader of Ye Olde Othere Site as well... but I can't get my fix of "Rusty sitting and staring" for a while! And that was why I definitely preferred this site!

Maybe if I grab a vector-modeling program and a few of the old archived pics, I can make a 3D model of Rusty for a "Virtual K5 cam"!

That was creepy. I load up the cam, expecting to see the old picture of me, and there's someone else there-- I'm in a Kinko's right now, and no one noticed me jump and surreptitiously look around, trying to find the camera. Then I realized it was just Dylan. Still, that was eerie.
