Your definition of art (5.00 / 11) (#91)
by wiredog on Sat May 18, 2002 at 08:23:50 AM EST

is far too limited, my friend. Yes, art can be graphic, as is the case of the Mona Lisa, but it can also be textual, as in the case of the Canterbury Tales. Since the Canterbury Tales would be on the net in ascii form, are they not an "ascii" art form?

Heh. This is a good point, but you're ignoring the inherent contradiction: Democracy is all about choice. The system of elections that has served America so well is a case in point. All the bleeding-heart liberals in the world screaming about political correctness can't help you here. If we have to give up rights almost no-one exercises, like freedom of speech, to preserve democracy, then so be it.

I'm not sure how you decided '';/{_\_/   `'\____'', given that you readily admit ''__  \\____//'', but there we go.

                                    \___  (o)  (o  }
       _____________________________/         :--'

  :: )  @@@@           @@@@@@        ,'@@(  `===='    Mooo!

Well, yeah, but you're missing the point: Linux may not be as user-friendly as Windows, but it doesn't matter. Linux users are all geeks, and as noted experts in the field like Jon Katz can tell you, geeks have no need for eye-candy, and happily learn stuff like ''-l print map$.[$!++]=$ARGV[1&($.+=!--$.[$.])],1..pop '' in order to feed their bloated egos and satisfy their rampaging sexual drives.

As if that weren't enough:

  :: : @@@@@:           @@@@         `@@@:
  :: \  @@@@@:        @@@@@@@)    (  '@@@'
  ;; /\      /`,    @@@@@@@@@\     :@@@@@)
  ::/  )    {_----------------:  :~`,~~;
 ;;'`; :   )                   :  / `; ;

The sheer US-centrism of this last statement beggars belief. ''----:  :~`,~~;'' my ass! I note that you haven't included one single link to back up your statement - if what you are saying is true, then surely people like Ashcroft would realize that the second amendment is a lot more than a hold-over from colonialism, and has nothing whatsoever to do with the monroe doctrine.

You then go on to say:

;;;; : :   ;                   :  ;  ; :
`'`' / :  :                    :  :  : :
    )_ \__;      ";"           :_ ;  \_\        `,','
    :__\  \    * `,'*          \  \  :  \   *   8`;'*  *
 ` ` `  `^' ` ` \ :/ ` ` ` `  `  `^'  `-^-' ` \v/ `:  \/

I have to say I agree with you on that last point. I think if nothing else this shows how just how out of touch middle America is with the real world. But it's irresponsible of you to pin the blame squarely on the mainstream media. If nothing else, they have a tremendous responsibility to the citizens of America, and as such they should watch what they say.

I think the article is flawed but hopefully some interesting discussion will come of it. +1 section.

by cnicolai on Fri May 17, 2002 at 07:18:07 PM EST

 Before he became a hermit, Zarathud was a young Priest, and took great delight in making fools of his opponents in front of his followers. One day Zarathud took his students to a pleasant pasture and there he confronted The Sacred Chao while She was contentedly grazing. "Tell me, you dumb beast," demanded the Priest in his commanding voice, "why don't you do something worthwhile? What is your Purpose in Life, anyway?" Munching the tasty grass, The Sacred Chao replied "MU". (The Chinese ideogram for NO-THING.) Upon hearing this, absolutely nobody was enlightened. Primarily because nobody understood Chinese.

It's obvious you didn't even take the time to run this through any kind of spelling check. It's fraught with gross misspellings, grammatical fallacies that would make your third-grade teacher weep, and hideous cliches.

As if that weren't bad enough, this article seems poorly researched, if at all. The least you could do is provide a link or two to back up these bold assertions which seemingly come out of nowhere.

You fail to address the primary issues and spend far too long analyzing tangents instead, setting up straw-man arguments that are an unfair and gross distortion of the other side.

Even your writing style is bothersome. There is absolutely no flow to this story whatsoever; it meanders from point to unrelated point and in the end fails to draw any significant conclusion. I read over it twice, very carefully, and quite frankly I'm still having difficulty understanding what argument you're trying to prove.

This article showed a lot of promise at first, so it pains me to give it a -1, but I cannot in good faith reward such an amateur effort.

It's fraught with gross misspellings, grammatical fallacies that would make your third-grade teacher weep, and hideous cliches.

  But don't you see - those very same errors were intentionally made in order to put further emphasis on the points that it raises!  It's a brilliant stroke of genius - I admit though that I missed it myself until I had read over it the fourth time.

  In fact, the whole article reinforces - not weakens - itself via those very same methods which you have voted it down for, while taking a snipe at the amateurish attempts that you speak of.

  This only becomes clear, though, once you've read the last line ("... `-^-' ` \v/ `: \/") over while keeping in mind the points raised in the body of the short article (one of the most prominent of which is "... `====' Mooo!"), denouncing via a subtle sarcasm common errors seen in articles, such as those bold assertions of which you speak.

  Also, I'm attempting to run this article through Perl to see if... What the - would you look at that?

MOO: One of the Greatest Games Ever!! (4.50 / 4) (#137)
by kojo on Mon May 20, 2002 at 01:52:21 AM EST

I remember reading a story about Masters Of Orion 3 a few months ago in one of the gaming mags. It was spectacular!

They talked about all of the detail that was available in the game, and how you play depending on your preferences. It turns out that there's a tremendous amount of detail you have access to in this latest version. If you want to micromanage everything, you can! If you just want to run things from a macro/strategic level and let the AI handle the details, you can do that too!

As one of the premier games of it's genre, MOO3 his highly anticipated. I'm glad to see MOO getting the coverage it deserves here on K5, where...
