A scientific investigation into the k5 trolling phenomena

k5

Objective

To scientifically determine who is the leading k5 troll.

Methodology

I wrote a perl script to scan through past diaries entries. Information (user name, sid, and number of comments) was gathered and stored in a postgresql database for further analysis. 1885 stories posted between 7-15-2006 --9-12-2006 were used for these statistics.

Errors

These results look at the raw number of comments posted to a diary and don't consider if the comments were posted by the diary author or someone biting on the troll. Nor did I consider what rating, if any, comments were given. Since "in the end, ratings do not really count for much," I didn't consider them meaningful for this study which focuses mainly on diary posting habits. The tendency for some users to post under multiple accounts also affects some of the aggregate results.

Metric 1: Crap Flooding

In all, 1885 diaries were posted by 396 users, an average of 4.8 diaries per user. The median was 2 diaries per user.

  • 941 diaries (49.9%) were posted by 50 users (12.6%).
  • 1413 diaries (75.0%) were posted by 127 users (32.0%).
  • 1696 diaries (90.0%) were posted by 228 users (57.6%).

Top 10 prolific posters:

User                | Diaries
--------------------+--------
 Water              |     54
 j1mmy              |     53
 LilDebbie          |     35
 MichaelCrawford    |     35
 victorianLoser(1)  |     34
 Egil Skallagrimson |     34
 Psychology Sucks   |     33
 Kronecker          |     32
 Marvaud            |     28
 zenofchai          |     26

Metric 2: Highest Commented Diaries

In all 36471 comments were posted, with an average of 19.3 comments per diary. The median was 14 comments per diary.

  • 18233 comments (50.0%) were posted in 383 stories (20.3%).
  • 27358 comments (75.0%) were posted in 794 stories (42.1%).
  • 32825 comments (90.0%) were posted in 1210 stories (64.2%).

Metric 3: Highest Average Comments Per Diary

To measure consistent troll activity, I compared the average number of comments per diary. To prevent one-troll wonders and other anomalies, only users with 5 or more diaries were included.

User             | Diaries | Total Comments | Avg Comments
------------------+---------+----------------+----------
 victorianLoser(2)|      34 |           1636 |     48.1
 redqueen         |       9 |            393 |     43.7
 zenofchai        |      26 |           1075 |     41.3
 Cambria          |       6 |            244 |     40.7
 wampswillion     |      13 |            511 |     39.3
 Unski            |       5 |            189 |     37.8
 psychologist     |       5 |            186 |     37.2
 kpaul            |       6 |            207 |     34.5
 trane            |      17 |            570 |     33.5
 MichaelCrawford  |      35 |           1162 |     33.2

Of particular interest, 4 of the top 5 users are known or suspected females.

Conclusion

Zenofchai and somaudlin3 managed to hit top 10 in all three categories, making them the all-round king and queen of trolls. Water and j1mmy are the most prolific crapflooders but failed to deliver elsewhere. MichaelCrawford, Egil Skallagrimson, and kpaul also made respectable showings.

Footnotes

  1. Including known dupes raises this total to 41.
  2. Including known dupes changes the totals to 41/1984/48.4.
  3. Somaudlin is the common name for a user that posts under multiple accounts (victorianLoser, victorianWhore, et alia).

by horny smurf on Sun Sep 17, 2006 at 06:19:14 AM EST

to the point that I'm abusing it. Some of the people named (ie, Cambria) take offense at being labeled a troll (and rightly so), while some people (ie Lemon Juice, Michael Crawford) happily admit to being trolls, even if they're more attention whore than troll.

Either way, I think this is a fair and interesting look into diary and commenting trends. Honestly, I didn't expect most of the names listed. Vote as you please.

I'm really surprised that you fail to understand the power of cat ladies here. You're like one of those old generals during the Great War who never realized that spunk and gumption, even when shared by tens of thousands of eager but stupid cannon fodder, isn't enough to take on a machine gun nest.

The feared cat lady just is far less prevalent than the teen dweeb. That is why the latter is the bane of this site instead of the former.

by MrHanky on Sun Sep 17, 2006 at 10:21:34 AM EST

You forget to take into account that somaudlin aka vicotrianLoser responds to almost every other comment in her diary, thereby also encouraging further replies. For instance, her The Desert Can't be Hotter... diary has about 40 comments by none other than victorianLoser herself. It's not a troll when she has to continuously feed it to keep it alive. Trolls are independent and self-sufficient creatures that by their fearsome nature will generate attacks from almost all naïve passersby. victorianLoser is more a spoilt child than a troll.

basically your top five in the Comments per diary category are all people who respond to everything and sustain long conversations. I'd expect some 30-40% of their comments per diary to be posted by the diarists themselves.

Indeed Somaudlin sometimes posts several "replies" before anyone else has even commented.

This affects your overall outcome quite markedly. As MrHanky points out.

Is it that this is an oversight, or are you trying to say that replying to comments constitutes trolling?

granted, not like Soma. I was thinking more like Zen, you do sometimes sustain conversations with a number of individuals in your diaries. Nothing wrong with that; I just wasn't convinced that it constitutes trolling.

your contention that trolling and attentionwhoring are interchangable is too flawed. the only thing that true trolling draws attention to is the stupidity of the trollee. and good examples of trolling are incredibly rare in the diary section. it's a worthless cesspool, a wretched scum of hive and villany.

Zenofchai and somaudlin managed to hit top 10 in all three categories, making them the all-round king and queen of trolls.

Is that like RCA in the 1970s claiming that with Elvis and Bowie they had the "King and Queen of Rock n Roll"?

by Morally Inflexible on Sat Sep 30, 2006 at 10:23:22 PM EST

On livejournal, it would be expected. Here you get quite a lot of attention simply because you are female.

In many ways, you are trolling simply by being here. like the woman that works in IT and shows up wearing makeup. In other situations, that would not be unusual; but in this one, it is blatanly screaming for attention.

heh. sometime I will have to tell you about the last time I made a girl cry. She was in IT, and yet wore makeup and heels (and it worked for her, she was hot.) Being the Sr sysadmin, I was explaining something simple to her, and apparently used a condecending tone of voice or something (I did think she behaved as if she got through school by batting her eyelashes and getting some nerdy guy to do her homework.) because she burst out in tears.

I wasn't trying to be mean- it just kindof slipped out. I felt horrible.

but yeah, that's why you get thrown into the troll bucket- if you were posting this to livejournal, it wouldn't be a troll.
