Announcing: WakeRiteTM Alarm Clock

Good news everybody! In my ongoing quest to manage my sleeping patterns, I have discovered a utility called an 'Alarm Clock', browsing a free software site. This application, and applications like it, work by emitting a loud sound when the clock's internal timer coincides with a time value of my own choosing. This timely emission of noise disrupts the user's slumber, waking them up.

I have since seen a great many alarm clock applications, for OS/X, for Windows and indeed for GNU/Linux. However, all of them share two showstopping flaws:

  1. They're not written by me.
  2. They don't have [esoteric feature that I don't think I could live without and hence justifies my re-inventing the wheel].

I have therefore decided to implement my own alarm clock application - WakeRiteTM - for OS/X. I did look at the excellent Alarm Clock 2 by Robbie Hanson, however it didn't have [esoteric feature that I don't think I could live without and hence justifies my re-inventing the wheel].

A standard promotional diary from a cartoon character is to follow. Once I have the alarm clock app working, I will be able to resume work on Ogg Frog, whilst continuing to practice my scales and hold down a job. Once Ogg Frog is running, I will have the funds necessary to teach programming in Africa.

I know some of my naysayers out there will criticise me for this, but Bonita agrees with me. She once said:

"Well, if that's what you want to do, you should do that then."

I owe it to her to succeed. She has been very supportive.

Fellate.

      • Although you say 'np' meaning (3.00 / 63) (#4)
by MichaelCrawford on Sun Jun 08, 2008 at 07:18 PM EST

'No Problem', in fact 'NP' can also refer to the concept of 'non-polynomial' time.

The relationship between the complexity classes P and NP is an unsolved question in theoretical computer science. It is considered to be the most important problem in the field - the Clay Mathematics Institute has offered a $1 million US prize for the first correct proof.

In essence, the question P = NP? asks: if 'yes'-answers to a 'yes'-or-'no'-question can be verified "quickly" (in polynomial time), can the answers themselves also be computed quickly?

Consider, for instance, the subset-sum problem, an example of a problem which is "easy" to verify, but whose answer is believed (but not proven) to be "difficult" to compute. Given a set of integers, does some nonempty subset of them sum to 0? For instance, does a subset of the set {−2, −3, 15, 14, 7, −10} add up to 0? The answer "yes, because {−2, −3, −10, 15} add up to zero", can be quickly verified with a few additions. However, finding such a subset in the first place could take much longer. The information needed to verify a positive answer is also called a certificate. Given the right certificates, "yes" answers to our problem can be verified in polynomial time, so this problem is in NP.

An answer to the P = NP question would determine whether problems like the subset-sum problem are as "easy" to compute as to verify. If it turned out P does not equal NP, it would mean that some NP problems are substantially "harder" to compute than to verify.

The restriction to yes/no problems is unimportant; the resulting problem when more complicated answers are allowed (whether FP = FNP) is equivalent.

as of 13:42 GMT today, mainly thinking of cat names and laughing at Publisher's shambolic EPS support. I will be home this evening to feed and water the cats, whilst thinking of cat names, and at some point it's likely I'll remember that I posted this at all, and then look at the great comments that K5 readers will have posted.

If 'GAY FOR CRAWFORD' means 'GAY FOR SMART CASUAL CLOTHING', then gay my loafers must be.

I must note with a considerable degree of arousal, that as much as 'hobo is 'GAY FOR CRAWFORD', you, Sir, have given me an increasing amount of attention. I'm sure that there is no valid comparison to be had here... Is there anything you wish to share with me?

way back in the day in times square (2.40 / 10) (#37)
by circletimessquare on Thu Aug 21, 2008 at 10:19:25 AM EST

before giuliani turned it into a disney mall, i used to go to this arcade now closed down a lot and play this videogame a lot, marvel versus capcom, in times square. i would always play blackheart, the same videogame character, at a regular time. and there were other regulars like me, who used to always play the same characters. a bike messenger dude was always cable, a camera operator for nbc was always iron man, a short order cook at a local deli was always sentinel, the guy who would get spare change by standing still in silver body paint was always wolverine, etc... times square established weirdos like myself blowing off a half hour of time

we would bicker and complain about cheesy moves, everyone would laugh, etc. if someone lost a lot they would grow acid and bitter and angry and everyone would laugh at him... it was vaguely collegial, often times fighting and complaints, sometimes broad kudos on well executed combos, etc.

one day, one of the guys, probably one of those dudes who makes his living painting portraits of tourists for $20, one day presented us with a detailed constructed drawing of each of us AS the videogame characters we played. it was incredibly well drawn and engrossing and flattering. i liked myself as blackheart

for five minutes we all ooed and ahhed and it was all smiles

and then it got quiet and everyone got uncomfortable and no one spoke for awhile, embarassed

the unspoken thought was: what kind of guy has such a lack of a social life that he grows so attached to some random assholes in a videogame parlor as to lavish them with such painstaking detail and attention?

and this thought, coming from deranged kooks in times square

now that you have read my little story, now you should have the proper attitude towards the author of this story about MC

yes, very well done. but please tell us you live in an astronomy telescope in the andes, and have no contact with other human beings. otherwise the amount of attention and detail created here for MC is quite creepy

i'm sure even your average mentally unsound k5 denizen can appreciate that observation. you make fun of MC, and yet you are MC's groveling sycophant, lavishing him with satire, yes, but of such detail and painstaking attention and familiarity with the guy and the guty, its really just a twisted form of praise

do you speak to people in the real world? do you need some sort of medication or therapy? these sort of unhealthy attachments to weirdos on teh intarwebs is, how do we say, unhealthy

Today I have spent many hours in the company of co-workers.

i didn't spend 5 hours wanking off to mc (1.40 / 5) (#41)
by circletimessquare on Thu Aug 21, 2008 at 01:19:25 PM EST

which, by the way, is what this story is

whether the attention you lavish on mc is positive or negative, it doesn't matter. it's sycophantic. to lavish such attention on someone else, positive or negative, speaks to a poverty of social connection in your real world on your end

ok you are at work. you think that is some sort of proof of social richness? the guy behind the counter at starbucks talks to hundreds of people nonstop every day. is that your definition of a rich social life? nevermind the it guy in the server room!

but lets go with you and assume perhaps you are a social butterfly, the life of the party, tons of friends

ok

but you obviously exist in that world on a shallow level, where you find no real personal connection with anyone else. because you obviously have a strong need to have some sort of interpersonal play that you are lacking in the real world

proof of this inference?

the very existence of the egowankery that is this story, that you felt a need to write it!

Let's a have a queue full of serious, political articles and have no more of this nonsense. Ideally, the kind of polarising USian partisan dreck that trolls you into threads nested fifty deep, such that you may be placated for a night or two.

I mean, you question my socialisation, but here you are making the kind of comment which is the only kind of comment you know how to make - a dry, humourless observation designed to suck the soul out of any atmosphere that may otherwise be present. A piss, on the parade. Here we go round in circles..

'Digby, you're a damaged man if you would spend time satirising someone on a website'

'Oh, mighty CTS, I presume you are functional and complete and above character-assassinations?'

'You don't need to know that. You just need to know I think you're damaged.'

'But, mighty CTS, you've just told me several paragraphs, wanking extensively about your youth, such that you may then tell me all about me...'

'Look, over there, a Low Budget HDV Filipino Horror Movie ..'

'Where?'

'CTS?'

And you never did differentiate yourself from that coin-op geek of your youth, which you self-referenced extensively in your opening shot, in the name of dramatic license. Namely, you never told me your job, and as such I must presume I am being criticised by some kind of spoilt, over-indulged child who has rich parents. Until otherwise indicated.

you can assume im a transsexual elevator operator (1.75 / 4) (#47)
by circletimessquare on Thu Aug 21, 2008 at 04:11:42 PM EST

what the fuck do i care what you think of me?

which again, reveals your psychological issues: what do people think of me?

this was your motivation in your lampooning of MC, and it is the presumptive motivation for asking who i am and waht i do

who cares if you lampoon mc? who cares wha ti do?

well, YOU care. because it concerns you, because you are a sycophant: you have no ego of your own, you must latch negatively upon the hides of others. a poverty of your social persona

as for more serious articles... what? who cares about serious articles? if i attack your article, why do you assume it is because i prefer some other form of article? i'm not attacking the UNSERIOUS tone of your story, i'm attack the PERSONAL NATURE of your story

do you see that?

you, by lampooing mc, have made something extremely PERSONAL, which tells us something about your motivations and your personality (or more exactly and more to the point, lack of personality)

you're a sycophant, and i'm calling you out on it

who cares about mc, who cares who i am or what i do. i don't

but you do

;-)

i got your number. your poverty of the soul

of course you do (1.66 / 3) (#50)
by circletimessquare on Thu Aug 21, 2008 at 04:40:11 PM EST

but there is a part of you that thought it would be useful to spend hours lampooning a specific individual on the internet. for psychological reasons, this says that you do in fact have a deficit as compared to most other people in your interpersonal life. because only someone with such a personality deficit would find the endeavour of writing the deeply personal story you wrote above to be appealing

its sycophantic, its parasitical. MC has something you don't have. i don't know what that is, but it spoke to you. maybe its some sort of confidence and self-assurance on MCs part, that's just a guess. but whatever it is, not knowing the first thing about this personal characterisitc you lack but strongly desire, you can only attack. attracted to the concept, but blind as to how to have it for yourself. so you atavistically lash out. YOU devoted all this attention to MC. yes, it is negative attention to MC. but it is the act of giving so much attention at all, positive or negative, that betrays you

the story you wrote above speaks volumes about yourself, not MC

so i got your number dude. you gave it to us. you have a deep poverty in you. you put it up for display by writing this story

so MC is supposed to feel good about this story?

he's not making fun of mc with this story?

"Because he was being positive (wrote something funny, made people laugh) while you were being negative - with the purpose of making him feel bad about himself"

you mean he wrote something funny, made people laugh at MC, fucktard

meanwhile, hypocrisy alert, my crime is i was making him feel bad about himself for doing that

you're a moron you know that?
