Christian University Yearbook has Nudie Pictures on Cover

Samford University, the school I am attending right now, is in the midst of a scandal over our subtly pornographic yearbook cover.

The image was taken from a rather large photomosaic of Christy Turlington's face, made up of thousands of tiny nudie pictures. The picture on the cover was blurred, to make the nudity less obvious. As a 4th year student here, I have to say this is the most awesome prank that anyone has pulled in recent memory. The fact that Samford is a conservative Christian school makes it even funner. You can get the AP wire story here and local Birmingham, AL coverage here.

LOL Much better than ours (4.00 / 1) (#1)
by retinaburn on Thu Oct 12, 2000 at 12:01:53 PM EST

At the front of our school was a 20 ft area lowered about 4 feet, with stairs and a set of double doors at the back. The year before us caulked the doors, taped up the electrical sockets then filled the entire thing with water and put gold fish in. They even chained the doors to the upstairs and basement so anyone remaining in the school could not foil their plan. But alas they were busted and forced to pay $100 in "damages"...they did pay but in pennies ..big bags of unrolled pennies.

Any one else hear of great school pranks ?

There's of course the "classic" hacks from MIT, homepage: http://hacks.mit.edu/Hacks/Gallery.html

I think it's a pity we don't have that tradition here in .no. Waking the teachers and having a bit of fun in the city the night before 17th May just isn't the same.

Only in the US (3.66 / 3) (#3)

It amazes me that readers of K5 could get the slightest bit excited about tiny blurred pictures of a model tastefully (nay, even artfully) posing nude. I guess that's the US bias in the forum showing. The US is the most sexually repressed country in the Western world. I find it quite surprising for a country that prides itself on a constitution that 'guarantees' freedom of speech. You guys make even the uptight English seem unrepressed!

And don't forget, we'll bomb the shit out of anyone who thinks otherwise!! Why can't the entire world see that America's political, social, and moral ideals are 100% correct? (for the sarcastically challenged, this entire post is a joke)

I think you are reading more (or less) into this than it warrants. This is interesting because it is the student directory for a Southern Baptist university. If you think americans in general are sexually repressed the SBs will stun you with their prudery (You know why baptists don't make love standing up?... Someone might think they are dancing ;). Another angle is that this could be a fine prank, although the creator denies it. Believe me, most americans find this highly humorous, not titilating or risque.

My big question is what the hell does Christy Turlington have to do with any of this? Is she a graduate of Samford? Representative of the student body? (yea, right) I'm not nearly as interested in the sex pictures as I am in why this design was chosen at all.

Partially laziness (none / 0) (#8)

If you notice the link I posted to the nudie picture was an set of examples for the GPL'd photomosiac software. I don't know why the developer chose to use Turlington and porno as his source material. The guy who made the designed the cover said he was trying to make a mosiac out of student pictures. He said that was too hard, and just used the example off of the webpage. He claims he didn't notice it was pornographic when he put it on the cover. Yeah, right. Nobody's buying that.
So Turlington has nothing to do with Samford. Just in the wrong place at the wrong time :-)
Besides, Samford girls are much hotter than Turlington anyway.

The attitude of most people on campus (students and faculty) is that this is highly hilarious. But there are a vocal minority, that are calling for the guy's expulsion. Most are complaining about his repeated lies to the Administration, and school paper, and then his half-hearted, doubious apology, and now he's pulling the "I'm a sinner, I have denied Jesus. Please forgive me." card.

That's the cleverest use of photomosaics I've seen so far ;)
