As a followup of sorts to my article about being careful what you say on k5, here's a cautionary tale about the power of the net to make the private *very* public: This Times article describes how a young lawyer he forwarded a "flattering e-mail about his prowess as a lover" from his girlfriend, Claire Swire, to six of his friends. The email has now been forwarded around the globe, the lawyer has been suspended from his job, and Ms. Swire has been hounded by reporters.

"Apologize".

Should she? (2.85 / 7) (#6)
by Latrell Sprewell on Sun Dec 17, 2000 at 11:55:06 PM EST

Should she (the author of the original email) really have to apologize for sending what she had intended to be a private email between her boyfriend and herself? If anyone should have to apologize, it should be the boyfriend who carelessly forwarded it to all his buddies! heh

I thought the poll was about the guy.

Apologise? (3.80 / 5) (#8)
by goonie on Mon Dec 18, 2000 at 12:01:46 AM EST

Ms. Swire, the original person who wrote the email, doesn't to my mind have anything to apologise for. Her boyfriend, who forwarded it to his friends, might well have some apologising to do (and seeing this story began about 5 days ago probably has been doing quite a bit of apologising already . . . )

Damn, I just saw this email ! (2.55 / 9) (#2)
by Phage on Sun Dec 17, 2000 at 11:32:34 PM EST

Closely followed by a (fake) threat of court action. I thought it was another hoax.
That poor woman...
I voted it up as a cautionary tale for us all !

I don't find Heathens to be sexy, as a general rule.

What exactly does the email say? (2.88 / 9) (#5)
by joeyo on Sun Dec 17, 2000 at 11:53:53 PM EST

I guess I've trained my friends well, because I don't get mindless email forwards (MEF) anymore. What does the body of the email say?

"Give me enough variables to work with, and I can probably do away with the notion of human free will." -- demi

You asked for it... (4.85 / 7) (#13)
by enterfornone on Mon Dec 18, 2000 at 01:34:15 AM EST

Here's the whole damn thing, as I originallly recieved i, best read from the bottom up..

BTW when you forward crap like this, remember to use BCC and remove the name of the person who sent it to you, lest it ever appear on a web site like this...

-start at the bottom-

and she's been found... well, unless someone has set up a dodgy excite.co.uk
email address? :)

I don't know whether any of you have received this yet.

Scroll down to the bottom and read the fairly awful jokes (mandatory part).
Then move up the screen and read the dialogue that follows - it is
tremendously funny.

+1, sectional, from me.

Part of me says that they don't deserve to be dismissed or suspended, the poor suckers (pun intended - sorry ;) ). I know if it was me, I'd be feeling pretty darn stupid right about now...

Hopefully, they've learned their lesson, and in the greatest traditions of Despair, Inc. their life will serve as a warning to others <grin>.

I voted +1 just with the hopes that it would make it to the general k5 public, and we could all (well, I could, anyway) see some more amusing anecdotes.

Someone has already posted that Salon is reporting this as a hoax.. When I read it, I took it as fact (yes, I am gullible), but I wondered how long it would take for a story like this to be relegated to the status of "internet myth."

I guess I have my answer. Still, I want it to be true. We need people like this in the world to make life more enjoyable for the rest of us.

Hmmm, I can empathize with the guy - Alittle over a month ago my "secret identity" was revealed. Mostly my fault, but still.

The only advice I can offer is that if you are going to be anonymous, don't do anything which would gather attention, as the veil is suprisingly thin.

Okay, I'm going to try to squeeze some sense out of this thread...

Well, thats a Blood Hound Gang song/lyric. Not an entirly usefull controbution to the discussion, but not a troll or spam.

But that I just don't understand. What is "Hobroken"?

Hoboken is a town in New Jersey. It's a suburb of New York, and NY suburbs are known for being smelly. So, the exchange goes like:

"Kiss me where it smells funny!"

"Where? Hoboken?"

It's a humorous misinterpretation of the word "where". Etc. You probably get it now. Anyway, I just couldn't resist after seeing the first comment.

emiail them? (3.60 / 5) (#14)
by radar bunny on Mon Dec 18, 2000 at 02:04:34 AM EST

So what if someone here on K5 were to email them:

Claire Swire[SMTP:Claire_Swire@excite.co.uk]
Chait, Bradley [mailto:chaitb@nortonrose.com]

and ask them to join our little discusion here? Could maybe at least settle the debate about this being a hoax or not. She's using a .UK email and nortonrose.com is registered to a a london company, so they at least appear to live in the same country. Who knows.

Ain't going to happen (4.75 / 4) (#16)
by goonie on Mon Dec 18, 2000 at 03:24:50 AM EST

So what if someone here on K5 were to email them . . . and ask them to join our little discussion here?

While this would be kinda cool, I doubt they'd be interested for the following reasons:

  • Mr Chait has been suspended from his job and may be sacked. He would be well advised to keep his mouth shut until he finds out if he still has a job or not.
  • It's unlikely either Mr Chait or Ms. Squire have ever heard of k5. Even if one or both wanted to discuss the experience in public, I doubt that k5 would be the forum they'd feel most comfortable with.
  • What possible incentive would those two have for discussing the incident here? Even if the regular k5 audience kept it clean and civil (and there is no guarantee of that) news of their appearance here would attract morons like flies, and anything they said would likely be misquoted in the press.
  • While it appears both of them are quite real, the Claire Swire email address probably isn't. Even if it is, it's probably unlikely she's ever going to read mail in it again (I'd imagine the inbox is full to overflowing from clueless journos and crude proposals from various sickos).
I'd love to hear them talk about this experience perhaps five years from now, after they have both gotten on with their lives.

Anyway, if you feel like it, ask away, but I don't like your odds.

I'm really sympathetic (4.20 / 5) (#17)
by jesterzog on Mon Dec 18, 2000 at 04:08:01 AM EST

I voted 0 to this story because when I received the email I made a minor resolution not to help spread it any further.

The email (by the time it reached me) was full of of chuckling and joking from people about the explicit stuff at the end. It's funny in a way, but also a bit sad, IMHO.

She could have encrypted it and remailed it and taken whatever net security measures she wanted to. She could have just told him straight out or written it down without even touching email. In the end though, it was her b/f receiving the message who abused it. (Okay, so having it in email in the first place made it easier to hit the forward button.)

I guess any lesson from this doesn't have as much to do with net security as it has to do with net propogation and that you should trust the person you're talking to.

The Register has dedicated a not inconsiderable amount of jouranalistic effort into this story -- actually doing a reasonably decent job of exploring the angles.

Has the Mail on Sunday article appeared? (2.50 / 2) (#20)
by goonie on Mon Dec 18, 2000 at 07:28:11 AM EST

In the articles linked above, it appears that she has (by now) already spoken on British TV and talked to a newspaper. As the Daily Mail/Mail on Sunday doesn't have a useful website, could somebody who read the paper or happened to see this Ms. Swire on TV please report anything interesting that she had to say?

This story was everywhere last week in the UK (front page of several national daily newspapers). There isn't much to add to The Registers coverage, but for what it's worth:
  • Lawyer carpeted over lewd e-mail (Metro/Yahoo)
  • Lover in trouble over mail ego (The Times)
  • Lawyer faces rap over email that crossed the world (Daily Telegraph)
  • Indiscreet e-mail lands lawyer in trouble (Annova)
  • E-mail woman in hiding (BBC News)
  • Obscene e-mail puts lawyers in trouble (BBC News)
  • Email boaster gets his comeuppance (Guardian)
  • Cyber sweet nothing goes public via loose lips in City (Guardian)
  • Also of interest is the recently added Norton Rose Email Abuse Press Statement

It's a shame it happened to her, but it does highlight some of the dangers of electronic communication.

    Email protocol (4.83 / 6) (#19)
by kmself on Mon Dec 18, 2000 at 04:38:04 AM EST

My first experience with the transmissibility of email came at my first professional job. A woman in the department replied to an email I'd sent out with a sweet (really, that's all) comment in French. Of course, my first email had been distributed to my department and a few other external heads, her reply went to the same list. I suggested exercising caution in what she cc:'d to Sr. VPs. No permanent harm done, though she did marry the other guy.... Some time later, I was subjected to a personality theft of sorts when a long-dormant email account was used to send spam to a list I'd participated in for years.

More recently I saw one of the more flagrantly extravagant acts of self-immolation I've seen in years. A subscriber to a mailing list, frustrated at being unable to subscribe, and apparently under the impression that posts weren't being forwarded to the list, pounded out a number of abusive responses/requests/taunts to the list. Bad move.

Listed in the emails were an office phone and organizational affiliation. Multiple members of the list submitted email to technical and administrative addresses associated with same, as well as others gathered from the poster's website. I ended up calling the person, suggesting that haste be made in repairing damage, and recognizing that this could have been a third party attack.

The moral is pretty clear: treat email communications as public material, regardless of who you send it to or how you protect it. Even encryption won't save you -- whether GPG or Disappearing Inc., it's a simple matter to cut and paste copy from one message to another. And sensational material has legs. While email authentication mechanisms are primitive and error-prone, making a practice of signing email with GPG makes repudiating unsigned mail more plausible. And if you do either slip up (or have your account missapropriated), apologize and explain early and often.

Last I heard, the listmember mentioned above had been unsubscribed, but faced uncertain future employment prospects. Serious consequences for a few minutes of unthinking rage. I do strongly endorse a spirit of forgiveness -- it's far to easy to make mistakes of literally global proportions. And if you do witness a bit of idiocy on the part of someone else, make an attempt to contact the person before assuming the worst. The consequences to them of something they may or may not have done can be extreme.

    Be careful out there.
