Mass-debating all over the Net (revised)

MassDebate is a fairly new, still small site devoted to debating the important issues, such as "Why are cigarettes called 'fags'?" and, more seriously, teenage pregnancy.

Other recent debates have been on "When does religion override the duty to preserve life?", Fuel Shortages, Corruption in the Judiciary, Teletubbies and Mind Control, and Stupid Censorship What makes MassDebate different is that provocative, minority, unusual, intelligent and different views are all encouraged. What made me decide to start the site was being sick of seeing perfectly reasonable, if controversial, comments being moderated down because a Slashdot moderator did not agree with them, or was not open-minded. There is no such thing as Flamebait on Massdebate. In these situations, either a comment is Offtopic or Provocative. This is to prevent kneejerk "Flamebait!" reactions. Moderators must now stop and think whether someone is merely being off-topic, or maybe they are right even though their view may be controversial or different. We don't shy away from controversial, differing views. In fact we want to see people with the courage of their convictions. We want to hear what people really think without holding back in fear that their controversial opinion will lose them karma. Reading a list of consensus opinions is not what we're about. We believe that opposing views need to be aired, and vigorous argument is cathartic to the individual. Note that we don't believe that our members should batter each other if they meet in a dark alley, but a bout of verbal combat is good for the soul and can sharpen the mind. At MassDebate, we believe that controversy and provocation are the key to turning a bland discussion into a lively, meaningful debate.

Then again, I would say that as I've just has a story published, but please do check it out and comment on my story.

This is insanely small (2.83 / 6) (#14)

There doesn't seem to be much debating going on

Nothing massive about it... (3.00 / 3) (#4)
by DoctorE on Mon Sep 18, 2000 at 11:31:38 PM EST

Upon reading the article it sounds like a good idea. If you actually visit the site you'll notice that many of the discussions have only one comment. One voice does not make a debate!

This makes me feel as though the article is a subtle way of trying to increase traffic for the site. I realize that the first sentence says the site is 'still small', though I didn't think it would be that small.

Let it mature (3.00 / 1) (#6)

I think the site is a great idea, but frankly it needs more time (e.g., for people to find it and, in particular, use it) before you can say that it's a great site.

It was OK (3.00 / 2) (#8)

It's pretty small so far! So I posted a comment. Sites like these spring up and fade just as quickly though. It'd be good to have a page which showed the current topics on a whole bunch of discussion pages so you could look and see if anything interested you without the hassle of going there.

Where was the debate (3.00 / 1) (#13)

I didnt find much of a coherent debate on your site. I dont see the "Sex, drugs, & NP" article getting a very heavy debate started, `cept maybe some troll from /. looking for a good time with grits. The site needs articles that are more focused on debateable (SP?) issues, and obviously more readership / participation. Its a good concept that needs a little TLC. Good luck :)
