Source Code for Early C compilers

Dr. Dobb's Journal has an interesting link to one of Dennis Ritchie's pages at Bell Labs in which Mr. Ritchie has made available some of the earliest source code to the original C compilers.

As an interesting aside, Mr. Ritchie makes a comment that seems to give some insight to this recent k5 discussion (Confessions of a crap programmer):
In looking over this material, I have mixed emotions; so much of this stuff is immature and not well-done, and there is an element of embarrassment about displaying it...

Man, I'm *always* embarrassed by my source code. Even if I try really hard to make it look good, I never want anybody to see it. But, if Dennis Ritchie can get over it, I suppose I can too.

Old source is *always* ugly (4.00 / 2) (#4)

I can just look at the 70-page cut-n-paste QBASIC program printout I did a few years ago and shudder for a few days. We all have to write poor code in order to write good code.
