Fairvue Central is hosting the first annual Weblog Awards, and Kuro5hin has been nominated for the "best computers or technology weblog" award. Now go out there and vote!

From the site:

From January 1, 2001 until 9:00 PM Eastern Standard Time (GMT-5) on Wednesday, January 17, weblogs were nominated.

The next day, a panel of 15% of those submitting ballots received an e-mail. It listed all the nominees of a category or the weblogs that receieved the most nominations in a category, depending on how many nominations were recieved for each category. They had until 9:00 PM EST Saturday, January 20 to privately submit their five favorites (six for Weblog of the Year) for each category. The five (or six for Weblog of the Year) receiving the most votes became finalists. I (Nikolai Nolan) voted in the cases of ties for fifth place. This panel was on an opt-in policy.

On Monday, January 22, the finalists were announced and voting is open again to choose the winners.

Voting will close at 9:00 PM EST on Wednesday, January 31. The winners will be announced in BlogIRC on irc.turlyming.net at 10:00 that night, and posted soon after.

This is such a Kuro5hin post... (4.00 / 5) (#1)
by pb on Tue Jan 23, 2001 at 08:26:48 PM EST

I think that this award is miscategorized; kuro5hin isn't a weblog that's solely about technology, and therefore if I voted, I would have to vote for Ars Technica.

But since I don't know most of the other sites mentioned, I'm not going to vote. :)

Yeah, I think it is miscategoized as well... But it was still neat to get a nomination.. the Bloggies are pretty big for those in the blog scene..

I can see... (2.40 / 5) (#5)
by ignatiusst on Tue Jan 23, 2001 at 09:18:30 PM EST

I can see voting this +1 FP - It's good for our community...

I can see voting this +1 Sectional - It's good for our community, but not what we'd like to see on the front page...

I can see voting this -1 Dump it - It may be good for our community, but self-promotion is a base thing, and one has to uphold one's principles...

But voting 0 Don't Care? I just can't see it. Can someone explain this to me?

Let's see... (5.00 / 3) (#7)

Maybe because, well, I don't care?

It's nice that Kuro5hin was nominated for an award which I'd never heard of before and don't care about. I went to the voting page, but had absolutely no opinion on any of the choices (hell, I'd never HEARD of all but three of the sites on there - /., k5, and ars-technica), so I didn't care about voting for the award I don't care about, either. So what's left to care for?

"I don't care" because, well, I don't.

i voted -1... (2.57 / 7) (#6)
by vsync on Tue Jan 23, 2001 at 09:22:55 PM EST

...because the "word" blog, or any derivative thereof, drives me absolutely mad. It's so very very annoying.

If I got a penny ... (4.00 / 2) (#10)

There are so many different web awards out there, that one more Web Award really doesn't make any difference. Back in '93, '94 it was really 'cool' to get a recognition for having a really good web page.

Now, all those web awards have no value any more. And because it's the first annual Weblog Awards nomination makes the whole thing even less appealing. There obviously isn't any tradition behind these web awards.

(I wanted to check out what kind of a site fairvue is, but their server seems to be down. Says a lot about it, doesn't it?)

So, I voted 'Don't care' because I really couldn't care much about yet another web awards nomination.

The quality of Kuro5hin site is shown in it's community, not in some web awards.
