By now I'm sure everyone has seen this image of the tourist on the WTC with the plane flying in behind him. I must have received the same image 5-10 times in various emailings, usually accompanied with an "Oh God, look at what they found on a camera in the rubble!"

The picture was proven to be a fake, but that was just the beginning.


It seems this modern day Zelig has been on one hell of a vacation.

As these snapshots were emailed to me, I've mirrored them for your enjoyment [ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 ]. If any of ya happen to know the original source, or have more to share, let us know.

The only picture that actually takes place anywhere near the WTC is the original(and others where the plane has been replaced).

Since the original was a fake that really did freak out a lot of people, it only deserves to be toyed with, if only just to show everyone how easy it is to do something like that.

I don't so much mind the pictures, even given their perhaps misguided foundations, as the sheer stupidity of them. (Yes, some of them are damn impressive. I personally like marshmallow man, but that's just me...) Let's collect all the All Your Base Are Belong To Us pictures too, and make a story about them.

And if somebody registers amiallyourwtcornot dot anything, I'm coming after you with a stick. And probably not a dull stick at that.

Do we get to have images in our stories now? I could see this as being a horribly abused resource. If it's just something the admins get to do for their stories, that's a bummer. I say submit your stories like everyone else.

Since I'm not an admin I can't use the img tag, but you can see this guy meeting with President Bush here. Obviously he met with him to discuss what happened, while Bush was showing him how big the airplane was.

My god, please warn people about image number 9! It is incredibly sick! Oh my god, the humanity, such Slaughter should never, ever be seen!

I was like, "What the hell? These images are all decent, what can you possibly be talking..." and then I looked a bit closer at image 9 and laughed. That's pretty funny.

It's a bit slow, but it has some pix that you don't.

As for these pictures being tasteless, well, ummm... they are, but they're also funny. I laughed!

And this got me thinking.... I rationalized laughing at these picture by classifying them all as icons. But the problem is that a number of the photos portray real human suffering, and pasting "The Tourist" onto them belittles the suffering of the photos' subjects. No matter how many times I tell myself I'm laughing at a parody of mere icons, my conscience tells me that many of these images are icons for good reason.

Would any of us find it funny to paste The Tourist onto this photo? I just might... and that makes me sick. I laugh and yet I hate myself for it, isn't there some big German word for this complex?

Is often to laugh at misfortune and stress. Ultimately, so we can survive and surpass them, I think. I remember a picture making the rounds at the pilot training school I once worked at: two grinning guys in a cockpit, smiling for the camera. In the background, through the windshield, we see a twin engine prop-plane about to collide with them. I got to see this picture many times, always being shown by a pilot who thought it was a yuck. And yet, midair collisions happen and continue to happen--could indeed happen to them.

The problem is (as with all comedy) timing. Some people (me included) laughed at these pics. Some will not laugh yet. Some will never laugh.

I don't know who did it, but the train in image 1 is from Melbourne, Australia. I can't imagine anyone outside Melbourne keeping a picture of one of our trains!

Practically all of these pictures come from somethingawful.com, with the funniest being this one. Unfortunately, the forum there has become a pay sight (worth every cent i might add), so there is no way to see the original thread. Somethingawful.com was also responsible for the "All your base" craze. Pure comedy gold!

I didn't realize that people would take that picture the wrong way. I saw it at a friend's place one day, looked at it, and laughed uproariously, thinking, "Ah, someone's AYBed the WTC." It never occurred to me that it might be actually mistaken for a real picture. I guess that's what happens when you become a hardened Net addict or something.

Don't ask me how I knew it was fake, I still don't know. Something was just wrong.

Everyone looked at me weird after that. I just thought they thought I was being weird. I have a reputation for that. Weirdness and bad puns. Ah well...
