Way cool, world's biggest crystals

A mining company in Mexico unearthed a couple of underground cavities containing the world's largest crystals.

From here, the things are like over 20 feet long. Some bozo also decided to try and take one or something and it fell and killed him. I might see if there's a way to "submit" Darwin awards -- a definite candidate....

stupid human tricks (4.50 / 2) (#1)

While the mine company is currently limiting visitation of the caves to scientific experts, mineral hunters have destroyed locks and broken into the chambers twice since they were first opened by mining equipment last April. One man was killed when he attempted to chop out a gigantic crystal that fell from the ceiling and crushed him, according to Fisher.

You have to wonder about someone stupid enough to try that. How many brains does one need to figure that a crystal larger than you are will hurt when it comes down on top of you?

I'm sure I'm not the only one who was thinking of superman's secret crystal cave after seeing the picture.

They say it was the crystal that killed him... but I know the truth... don't mess with superman's stuff.

Cave temperature? (none / 0) (#6)
by Ludwig on Tue Feb 13, 2001 at 01:44:36 AM EST

|? W?hese caves so hot? (bet. 100-150 deg. F) Every cave or coalmine I've ever been in has been cool year-round. These are 1200 feet deep, so it's not the surface temperature, and I doubt it's geothermal (a mining company wouldn't be digging near any magma flues or geysers or whatnot, would they?), and it can't be, like, crystal vibrations generating heat, so what is it?
