I've spent years making writing serious programs and building important hardware for mission critical projects. Now I'm a thirtysomething burnout and just want to make things that make me giggle. Submitted for your consideration....the Mechanical Hit Counter. Ping your little hearts out.

Wow!! (2.00 / 2) (#6)
by BigZaphod on Tue Mar 06, 2001 at 08:06:15 PM EST

This is awesome! Not much else to say, really. But wow... Cool idea. Pointless? Yes. But still cool!

And it just so happens to come at a time when I'm starting to learn about digitial electronics and playing with circuits myself. :-) Very nice.

Instructions on page wrong! (4.33 / 6) (#7)
by rusty on Tue Mar 06, 2001 at 08:07:28 PM EST

Ok, the istructions on the page linked don't work. Luckily for you all, I figured out how to make it work.

  1. Open up http://www.embeddedether.net/webcam.jpg
  2. Note the number shown
  3. In a terminal, run something like ping -c 3 208.37.171.245
  4. Reload the image in your web window (shift-reload to ensure that it actually refreshes this image). It should have incremented by at least 3 (possibly more)
  5. Say "Cool!" and yell to your coworkers/roommates "Come here, you gotta see this!" :-)

It isn't so much that the instructions are wrong, but that the refresh on the webcam page is pointed at the wrong thing. In any case, the above instructions will work.

Javascript (none / 0) (#18)
by leviathan on Wed Mar 07, 2001 at 04:38:36 AM EST

I'm curious to know why it needs Javascript (not Java like you say in the page source!) just to open a new browser window. It's working fine here without it, and refreshing properly now.

I've got to say I'm impressed though. Considering the rate it's hammering up right now (when most of America hasn't got up yet, and hell, even Rusty's probably gone to bed) - just over 1 hit/s - I've got to see this in a few hours time.

I'm still learning HTML and just copied this out of a book. If you have a more elegant solution, please send it to matt@daughtrey.com. Thanks

Hey, how do we know it is really a mechanical hit-counter!? How do we know that it isn't really just a cunningly done graphical hit counter!?!?

More than just a toy (none / 0) (#10)
by jxqvg on Tue Mar 06, 2001 at 08:43:54 PM EST

It's actually somewhat more than just a little toy. I can actually ping an address and have it affect some real world object. Granted there are plenty of clever and not-so-clever ways you can get an analogous result, but this is just plain neat!

It's not replying to any of my pings.
