Prepared to get fired from your job? If you click this link, you will do nothing else all day but this. Scaled Trick Racers is the most fun I've had with shockwave yet.

I don't know who made this, but I hate you now. Darn you. Darn you to heck. Thanks for wasting my day. Oh... and thanks for the hours of mindless entertainment, too.

For the terminally lazy... (4.50 / 2) (#4)
by regeya on Wed Apr 11, 2001 at 12:58:27 AM EST

It's a slick li'l Shockwave file that lets you build a trick-racer track (y'know, those neato electrified tracks that you probably drooled over as a kid) and race against the computer. Neat stuff. :-)

Nice bit of fluff (none / 0) (#10)
by Wah on Wed Apr 11, 2001 at 12:46:01 PM EST

Definitely a cool little app (+1 from me). I actually got my car to jump lanes and race in the same one as the pace car. Good stuff, and you don't even have to clean the tracks to get good connections.

Shoo! (2.75 / 4) (#5)
by thunderbee on Wed Apr 11, 2001 at 02:38:32 AM EST

Doesn't work with linux/netscape. I wonder how many people are open-source bigots and flame M$ as often as they can and still run M$ IE?

It's a good thing (3.66 / 3) (#6)
by enterfornone on Wed Apr 11, 2001 at 03:09:27 AM EST

that this is not a Linux/Open Source bigot site.

I don't use IE (1.33 / 3) (#7)
by FeersumAsura on Wed Apr 11, 2001 at 03:44:58 AM EST

Well I love open source and run Linux almost exclusively. I've never found a website that I felt was worth destroying my uptime just to view. The only thing that ruins my uptime is Win only games.
On another rant Flash and Javascript are one of the evils that should be destroyed, along with animated gifs. A good site can get by with text, small images and forms (a la K5). Flash is a foolish invention for slaes people and those with short attention spans, it's the online equivalent of pictures in books.

reimplement the above site in text, small images and forms.

I'm not a fan of sites that use shockwave for everything, but there can be a time where it's the right tool for the job.

Not necessary (2.00 / 1) (#9)
by FeersumAsura on Wed Apr 11, 2001 at 11:25:23 AM EST

Your site already seems to be mostly text based with no shockwave that I noticed. OK so you don't need forms I meant for bigger sites with content. Shockwave and rollovers are just attention grabbers for people too stupid to read big blocks of text.

I meant the MLPed site, not my site.

Hmm maybe not (1.00 / 2) (#17)
by FeersumAsura on Thu Apr 12, 2001 at 10:17:50 AM EST

OK so I couldn't do that site in a decent way but sites like that don't need to be done. If you need pointless shit let us download the source code and compile it.

Uhh (none / 0) (#18)
by nebby on Thu Apr 12, 2001 at 11:52:03 AM EST

The whole point is that it's a hell of a lot easier for people to just load up a web page. Besides, only a small chunk of people know what compile even means.

I agree that Flash and Shockwave are bad, but not because of what they accomplish, which is great, but because of the way they go about it (and were forced to do so,) a plugin. It goes against the web page concept, its too bad it was not possible for Flash to become a standard HTML tagged sub-language or something. It's not Macromedia's fault, however. Having eye candy on the web is far from being "wrong" .. like anything else it can be done poorly or well.

Exactly. If we had to compile everything like pointless animations people would learn faster. The minority who are too stupid to learn how to compile can be safely ignored. I think it's wonderfull that flash never became a language subset. If every bit got added on we're be writing pages in ADA.
While I may piss a lot of people off I think I candy is mindless crap for the short of attention span. Kuro5hin and /. show how good webpages can be made simply.

IE doesn't work either (none / 0) (#15)

It crashed on my IE / NT 4 machine here too. It's an equal opportunity crasher I guess.

It doesn't work with Netscape 6 on account of the fact that Shockwave supposedly doesn't work with Netscape 6...

I'm not doing this again; last time no one believed it.
ah the nostalgia.. (5.00 / 1) (#14)

Oh God this is great...

When we were kids, my dad had a luggage box full of these.. The same kind as in this game, with the two electrical contacts on the bottom of the cars, as opposed to the later versions that had the pin that fitted into the track. I still can remember the smell... and cars flying everywhere...

my dad had one of these sets from like the 60's but he never let me play on it...so it just got in worse and worse condition over the years and now it's trashed. and i never really did get a chance to use it. [cries] everyone should go and see this website. everyone with a computer/modem fast enough to handle it that is...
