The Return of Geekizoid

Geekizoid, the gayest, goatiest and most godawful community oriented weblog on the planet has returned. We were off the web for 22 days total, and have learned a great deal from our mistakes. We'd like to share them with you, so that others do not repeat them.

[editor's note, by rusty] Good to see GZ back. Now read on to play "find the goatse.cx link". :-)

The first lesson in creating a slash site for trolls is "don't use slash." Let's be honest, slashcode is deliberately ugly and unusable. If you've ever seen admin.pl on a slashcode based site, you know exactly what I mean. It's complex, counterintuitive and cringe inducingly vile. Scoop may require 2 phd's and a crate of bananas just to post a comment, but at least the color scheme doesn't make your eyes bleed, so use scoop instead.

Now that you've got your codebase, you need someplace to put it. Do not, under any circumstances, go with a hosting provider that considers this to be an example of professional website design. Even slashdot's apache section has a better color scheme than that. Also, be aware that several hosting providers are tools of the International Zionist Conspiracy. We have reason to believe that the recent Israeli/Palestinian conflict was rigged by the Zionists as an excuse to call the sysadmin responsible for geekizoid's server into the Israeli army instead of letting him fix the damn thing. Forturnately, we have learned from this mistake, and picked an uncirucmcised hosting provider this time. But we do not bear any hard feelings or resentment towards the Jews. As Heidi Wall would say, "'tsall good."

Finally, if your data is important to you, make the occasional backup. It's quick, painless and will save you many a heartache and a tear down the road. No joke.

You rock, shoeboy, and may all your dreams come true and you finally find true love in the arms of your dear Heidi. (Even if you subsequently discover to your dismay that she's really Inoshiro in drag! Hey, who am I to say its wrong?)

I mean, if you have to post gross links, at least the goatse.cx ones, or something that isn't so offensive 8^).

On the flip side, this software for the visual-impaired works just great, being that I am now struck blind...

Did you, infact, fix all the typos in slashcode and turn your website into a flight simulator? Was that why you were offline for 22 days - you were too busy playing it?

(this is an inside joke, for those of you who are humour-impaired...)

You know, it's a lot less funny if you explain it to everyone.

It would have been funnier still if you'd just implied it... For example by saying that it took Vladinator 22 days to figure out how to adjust the flaps and raise the landing gear, or something.

Oh well, someone's got to cater to the special kinds. Special in that 'little yellow schoolbus' sort of way.

Heh! I dub thee Honorary K5 Social Worker of the Week. :)

So, how come you're still not using Scoop?

Oh, and we know that scoop.kuro5hin.org is down. We're having machine issues with that box. I think we're going to move it elsewhere, as it can't seem to remain up for more than a few hours. Thanks for your patience.

Why no scoop (5.00 / 1) (#23)
by flikx on Thu Apr 19, 2001 at 02:47:15 AM EST

Although I see many advantages to running scoop, I personally have stuck with slash on my site. I suppose I'll leave out the specific reasons here, but allow me to say that both have their ups and downs.

I was more than happy to help Geekizoid get back up on a new server by building a linux 2.4 kernel, perl, modperl, apache, and mySQL .. as well as fix some misc. problems. I'm greatful to see the site back up .. Geekizoid really has a great team, and has by far exceeded my expectations from a few months ago.

Back to the original topic, maybe someday I'll give scoop a try on one of my own projects, though I can't speek for Geekizoid. Keep up the great work everybody.

BTW - Rusty, are you going to do another GiZ interview to replace the one that was lost? That was by far one of the best interviews I've ever seen. (honestly, it was).

I think so too. I know KTB has a copy, and I think some others do too. I guess either they'll put it back, or it will exist as samizdat, in the dark, slimy underbelly of the net somewhere.

Did my account get erased?

Oh well, I don't really want to take the time to set it up again... wasn't MUCH worth it... I was just wondering.

Hey, this is a cool place for Geekizoid tech support.

When I try to create a new account, that thing tells me the account couldn't be found, so no password was mailed. Sounds quite gay, doesn't it?

Heidi Wall (4.00 / 8) (#11)
by enterfornone on Sun Apr 15, 2001 at 06:21:42 PM EST

I didn't see anything wrong with the Natalie Portman fetishes. I even joined in back in the days that Segfault still had a comment system. But am I think only one who is disturbed by people obsessing over "real people" like Heidi and Mae Ling Mak etc.

you're not alone (4.20 / 5) (#12)
by Speare on Sun Apr 15, 2001 at 06:56:15 PM EST

The chances Natalie Portman would even read k5 or slashdot are about the same as the probability she will become petrified after reading ESR's sex tips.

The chances that Heidi Wall would read these areas is a lot higher, and the chances that her family would read them is even greater than that. What do they feel? Honor? Revulsion? Fear?

The poor kid looks about 18, and for whatever reason, every photo I've seen has her eyes shut... maybe that's bad timing, or maybe she already resents the "penguin paparazzi." Give her a break, leave her alone.

You're quite right (4.00 / 7) (#17)
by qpt on Mon Apr 16, 2001 at 01:44:51 AM EST

As a friend of Heidi's, I can assure you that she does indeed feel what could easily be described as "fear" and "revulsion". I have emailed both shoeboy and Kiss the Blade on her behalf, but to no avail. As far as Heidi knows, Larry, her father, is as yet unaware of the situation and she hopes to keep it that way. I, on the other hand, have been encouraging her to tell her family and more importantly, to get the law involved.

It is a difficult situation, doubtless, and although my please have to this point fallen on deaf ears, I would ask shoeboy to please give this up.
