Internet

Robert X Cringely has been around for a while, you might call him a pundit. He usually talks about goings-on in the industry, but this month, he's written about an extremely cool hack he pulled off in order to get a high-speed low latency internet connection to the middle of nowhere.

About 36,000 feet from the telephone central office, too far for DSL, he decided try sharing a DSL connection with someone closer. so he bought himself a telescope

Isn't "Robert X Cringely" a pseudonym that has acutally been used by MANY Silicon Valley writers whenever they were going to write something that would likely piss off tech industry bigshots???

That way no one would know WHO was talking trash and said journalists wouldn't get their access to the likes of Jobs, Ellison, et al. cut off.

The name was originally used in a computer mag, as the blame whenever they had to do corrections or whatever. After a while, they started having the Cringely character do regular columns. They would have staf writers do it, most did it for a few months. Eventually one guy -- this guy -- started doing it regularly for like 11 or so years. When he quit the magazine, they ended up suing each other or something. And he can't use the name in print or something like that... so he went on to do the PBS thing. I guess the 'net doesn't count as print... or something

How did this get posted? (2.00 / 4) (#13)
by Kasreyn on Sun Jul 01, 2001 at 04:25:16 PM EST

Hardly any commentary, just a link. You know, slashdot has an article feature for interesting links with very little commentary... they aggregate 4 or 5 such mini-articles and post them at once. Makes it worth the page load. Just a suggestion if this sort of linking becomes popular on K5! =)

Hardly any commentary, just a link.

That's why it's in the MLP section!

Only three spare telescopes? (5.00 / 1) (#17)

Shame, if he had four he could do himself a nice laser link between the two sites.

Why would you need a telescope for laser link? (none / 0) (#18)
by Anonymous 6522 on Tue Jul 03, 2001 at 03:55:09 AM EST

Laser's travel in a straight line, the beam doesn't spread out much. If he wanted a laser link, all he'd have to do is aim the lasers precisely, and hope they don't vibrate much.
