Have you ever wanted to see a missile silo imploded? Well now is your chance (RealPlayer required)! Back in my home state of North Dakota they have been blowing them up on a regular basis to comply with the START treaty. This cool video is part of a story written by the StarTribune about such implosions. Along with the video there is also a simple diagram of a silo demolition.

Sure Looks Like an Explosion to me (none / 0) (#8)

If they pumped all the air out of the silo and caused it to collapse inwards from atmospheric or other pressure, it would be called an implosion.

If they drill holes and put hundreds of pounds of explosives into the structure as they are doing here, I would call that an explosion.

As I understand it the word implosion entered the marketing language in order to allay people's concerns with explosions. Unfortunately I think this term alienates the large segment of the public which likes to see things blown up.

I don't know (none / 0) (#9)

They blew out the walls and the top off, and forced dirt and gas in the air, but the results of it is the silo falling in on its self.
