You all know how I feel about the Slash code, and the stubborn insistence of everyone there to not release a newer version till they're damn good and ready, so I'm taking the bull squarely by the horns, or something.

Scoop is (will soon be?) an open-source story server which borrows many ideas from slash. It does not, however, use any code from the slash distribution, unless you count the database structures, which are only slightly modified from slash's. But the perl is all fresh and shiny.

Check out the link above for the current state of scoop. That site is running on Scoop code, with a bunch of database tables copied in from kuro5hin, so there'll be something to look at.

Nothing on that site is hard-coded in. It's all drawing live from the database. That said, nothing's really settled yet either. You cannot do anything like post comments or stories, but that's all coming very soon.

The source is in cvs at:
CVSROOT = :pserver:cvs@cvs.kuro5hin.org:/cvs
Password: cvs

This is far from a working product, at this stage, but some of you might want to look at it (especially you, Matthew Sachs!) and ponder how my work might fit into the greater picture, and if you'd like to help.
