Baen Books, the publishers of books by such science fiction/fantasy authors as David Weber, David Drake, Andre Norton, and Mercedes Lackey is making available (for free) online (both HTML and various e-book formats) copies of several of their books. Interestingly, Eric Flint (the author of "Mother of Demons") is the First Librarian and, in addition to having "Mother of Demons" on-line, has a great essay on free-publishing at Baen Free Libary

Where the books are... (5.00 / 1) (#10)

I see comments asking where the books are - they're on the page at the bottom and available in several formats.

Those links at the bottom of the page in question are download links for a combined file, in whatever format, of all of the above books.

They're there - all you have to do is click on them. (I personally downloaded it for the David Weber book which I like re-reading all the time. ;-)

Another free book place... (3.00 / 2) (#12)

...is bookface.com. One of the founders is Peter (forget the last name) of GIMP fame.

They don't let you download books, but you can view them in a Java-based reader. Some of their selection includes new and current fiction. Unfortunately, you have to look at banner ads while reading the books.

If this post is starting to sound like a shameless plug, well, that's because it is. :) No, I don't work there, but a friend of mine does.

The Free Library is real - go get em! (5.00 / 1) (#13)

"Whaaaaa!!! Where's our free books. We don't wanna have to actually LOOK for them! Whaaaa!!!"

I don't know what everyone's problem is. Do a little digging.

Here are a few links to HTML versions of the free books that they are talking about.

There are more and they can be found here

As far as I'm concerned this is an pretty significant event in publishing history. Just reading the press release got me all giddy as it states all the right things regarding piracy, copyright, and audience. I get the sense that Baen is really buying into the concept.

The really nice thing is that it feels very sincere and marketroid free.
