You Know...

BIG NEWS!! Turns out Rusty will be getting a new laptop. I'll keep a close eye on him over the next weeks and let you know how it turns out. I am sure that this will be the first in a series of articles on how he is able to adapt to this new mobile environment. Congratulations RUSTY :)

[editor's note, by rusty] This comes to us courtesy of my boss, who's name actually is "Anonymous Hero" ("Anonymous James Hero" in fact). And it is true, that I'm finally getting a laptop. What does this mean to you? Well for one thing, it means paranoia (the box that serves kuro5hin.org) will be moving off my desk and into a server room somewhere with some more bandwidth. So good news for the site, after all. :-)

Sure is. Still, make sure you look into geting a wireless lan connection such as a Wavelan.

There's been a discontinued IBM wireless lan kit[1] selling dutch on eBay off-and-on for a while now. (Two ISA, one PCMCIA card bundled together for under $100) Unfortunately, there is not a working Linux driver for these and Linux development for these stopped over a year ago. I guess information on these was hard to come by -- and reverse engineering turned out to be a real pain.

Anyhow, Lucent's Wavelan has Linux drivers, but these cards can be on the expensive side. There are other wireless lan cards supported by Linux also.

[1] Both kits featured on the IBM page have been on eBay. The one with the base station hub (Wireless Lan Entry) costs more but is slower than the other kit (350Kbps vs 500Kbps-1.2Mbps).

Good luck on getting sound to work under Linux. I've had no end of headaches with that NeoMagic combo card that comes in the newest Vaios. Configuring the PCG-F370 was no problem, but the F390+ seem to use a different chip set.

Sounds like you have a decent boss. You must work for a small company!
