Echelon Crashes

Reminded of ars technica by another submission, I popped over there today and discovered that the NSA's Echelon computer system apparently crashed on January 24th, and stayed down for four days (the Sydney Morning Herald article, a slight rewrite of "NSA Blackout Reveals Downside of Secrecy" from the L.A. Times, was linked to from ars technica's front page). But aside from being informative about the spy outage, the article linked above is also a very interesting analysis of the problems facing the world's biggest ear in these hyperlinked and info-saturated times.

The article was intresting. I don't believe the NSA is behind the times though. Well, maybe the NSA specifically has problems but the alphabet soup is well funded. Also, disinformation is not out of the question.

I don't buy it (none / 0) (#2)

No Such Agency comes out and says their system crashed? I would think that would be the last thing they would tell anyone. It could be a ploy to get more funding, or to establish some plausible deniability for that time frame. Or perhaps they would like people to start thinking that their system is unreliable.
