Free Domain Names

Ok, I'm skipping story moderation because this is kinda time-sensitive. Starting approximately right now (9PM EST), registerfree.com is giving away free domain names for one hour. One per person only, and the site's pretty slow already, so good luck. If anyone snags a cool one, let us know. :-) Update [2000-3-23 21:28:51 by rusty]: Well, it's nearly 9:30, and nothing works. Feh.

Damn it seems that I am too late :(

daniel *sigh*

ps. I dunno about the rest of you lot but I read the moderate submissions section as often as the main page... I've always wondered whether that makes the seperate submission modertation largely cosmetic or whether there are a lot of users who just read the main page but don't read the submission moderation queue...

Bah. I can't get anything either.

And the submission queue is not cosmetic-- if you guys don't vote, nothing gets posted (usually). This happened to be a very rare case. Seems like it wasn't particularly necessary anyway, as the damn thing clearly doesn't work.

Moderating (none / 0) (#5)
by nascent on Thu Mar 23, 2000 at 09:38:09 PM EST

Since it takes a bit for stories to get moderated up when he has 500 people registered, I'd say a sizable portion of the readership don't know about the moderation, or are perhaps apathetic.

The readers get to pick what is displayed. Oh, the horror. =)

Can't even connect, but... (none / 0) (#3)
by fluffy grue on Thu Mar 23, 2000 at 09:28:08 PM EST

All of the .com/.net/.org domains I could possibly want are already taken. grue.*, magenta.*, fluffy.*, solace.*, and the like... basically, if it's in the dictionary or any jargon, it's probably already taken, which is probably why now we're seeing lots of really long domainnames. :P

And anyway, since I can't even get to the site I don't know if this is free "forever" or for the first year or what, and the "alternate" domains from technologically-lacking countries (such as .cx, .nu, .tf, and so forth) are so much more interesting and cheaper anyway.

Well, according to the CNN article someone else posted a link for, looks like the service is, in fact, free for only the first year. However, after that it's only $20/year, which makes it actually cheaper than most of the alternate TLDs (.cx included), and they're going to have other domain free-for-alls in the near future, though I think I'd rather just pay $20 up front anyway rather than having to scramble for a shot at saving $20 at the expense of taking for-fucking-ever to get it (which is certainly more than $20 worth of time).

Nod... I'll have to take a look at em once this all slows down.. I'm really looking to give my money to a company that is not Network Solutions.

By the way, fluffygrue.com/net/org is available..:]

T1's are going nowhere here at RCN (none / 0) (#4)
by nascent on Thu Mar 23, 2000 at 09:35:52 PM EST

This site is getting hammered like a redheaded stepchild. I work at the RCN Call Center in Springfield, Massachusetts, and we have over a dozen techs sitting behind T1's and not a single person has gotten a domain yet. So don't curse your provider just yet.

Has anyone registered anything yet? That page asks you to type in a domain name to register, then asks for personal information. No privacy policy, terms of services, nothing. Maybe this is a job for RIG.

Yeah, I was a little weirded out by that too. One "assumes" that it's for the registration process. But of course, since their script is obviously borked anyway, I don't expect they collected much of value from me.

This is annoying I got through to the tucows site and tried from 3 different versions (and OS's) of netscape, IE, and finally lynx and no matter HOW I filled in the fields it kept giving me most of them (randomly too) as being full of syntax errors. Really REALLY annoying.

Yeah, same here. Looks like someone wrote some really bad perl over there. Amazing that ever made it through testing... unless something really weird happened at the last minute. Maybe they tested it with Macs :-)

Why is this such a big deal? Domain names are only $16 through joker.com. You can't beat $16/year. I have registered redefined.org and god-damn.com (can you believe that wasn't taken?) through them. One of my friends also registered fuckingloser.net through them. It was just as easy as with Network solutions but much cheaper.

I got one! (none / 0) (#20)
by driph on Mon Mar 27, 2000 at 04:38:07 AM EST

Nyeh nyeh nyeh! I actually got a domain out of it! Got in at the tail end...their lil counter thing said 56 seconds left...heh

Finally showed up in the NetSol whois lookup...
It's a domain for my girlfriend, so I'll have to ask her what they've sent her so far about the site..

The promotion was a great idea.. For me, if they are easy to work with setting up this domain we registered, I'll definately use them the next time I go to register a domain. Anything but Network Solutions.
