RFC: So, you wanna be a columnist?

Kuro5hin.org

Kuro5hin has decided to dip its toes in the waters of original content creation and see what bites, or, umm, doesn't bite, as the case may be. Toward that end we're putting out this Request for Columnists. If you can write well, have something to say you think others will want to hear (and discuss), and can generate a column relating to technology and/or culture once a week, hit the link for details.

The job

You will be asked to write a weekly column on the subject of your choice under the "technology and culture" umbrella. Note that the subject matter can relate to either tech or culture; it doesn't necessarily have to be both. Content and style will be at the author's discretion, with a few caveats.

The goal of these columns will be to give people a springboard for discussion; we're looking for insightful analysis of a given subject by someone who understands it. "Patents suck dood!" won't cut it. An explanation of how the patenting process works followed by well supported comments as to why you agree or disagree with it gets two thumbs up.

Even though these will basically be opinion pieces, it's extremely important that the columns are factually correct. In order to ensure that the proper research is done, and to help readers understand the context in which facts are given, sources will need to be attributed. If you tell us that 4 out of 5 dentists prefer Trident, you'll also need to tell us where that number came from.

Columns will need to be submitted at least two days before publication. They will be edited, and if any changes are deemed necessary, they will be sent back to the author so these may be made. On the publication day, the column will be put into the submission queue along with the other stories posted by Kuro5hin's readers. There will eventually be a box on the front page with a link to the current column; people who want to follow it will be able do so without worrying about whether it gets posted. However, Scoop is currently undergoing a rewrite, and this probably won't happen until after that's done.

This will be an unpaid position for the forseeable future (until VA makes us The Big Offer, at least... ha ha).

Great! Where do I sign up?

Glad you asked! Pick a subject and get to scribblin'. When you've got your masterpiece honed to perfection, send it to editors@kuro5hin.org. We'll look it over, and if everything looks good we'll drop it into the submission queue. The readers will have their say, and when the smoke clears we'll have a columnist! Simple, huh?

If the readers would like to pressure a particular person to submit a column, feel free to use the comments below to do so. We're all about reader-driven stress here. ;-)

Necessary: no. Desirable? I think so. Yes, anyone can be (and is more than welcome to be!) a columnist, simply by setting themselves a deadline and submitting a column every week, just like any other article. What we'd like is to have someone agree to work with editors (we're nice editors! really!), work within some sort of a fixed schedule, and agree to provide references for their assertions of fact. Basically, we want to start creating original content at more regular intervals. That's really all. We're also definitely not saying that "there will be one, and only one columnist." We want original articles, so good articles will never be refused.

The second thing is that the way the site works, mechanically, right now, will be changing. Sections, more customization, etc etc etc are all on their way. I'd like to see content grow into the new system, rather than start up a new system and wait for it to fill. And really, no one does anything unless prompted. So we want the world at large to know that we're actively looking for someone with a voice, who needs a place to speak.

And, as always, the final say on any column will rest with the readers. There may eventually be a "columnist box" where the latest column goes, but to appear on the front page, it's gotta get voted there like anything else.

Sounds like a good idea to me. I may even write something. As for encouraging others, I just haven't been paying enough attention to who's written what in comments. I tend to enjoy the pragmatic wit in the notes pwhysall throws in with submission moderation, though.

Umm, please allow me to quote from the job description:

'Nuff said? ;)

Asking who will be the next Dave Barry is like asking who will be the next Bill Gates. Do we want that? I have nothing against Dave Barry, but, hey, the Net is about distributed computing. What we need are more small and anonymous heroes.

Don't be so harsh, rusty- I'd love to hear reviews (with a tech/culture spin) of movies out there.

Maybe theater (like musicals, right?) would be a little more difficult to relate to technology and/or culture, but if our anonymous hero wants to take a stab at writing something interesting, I'd be all for it. Stick it in the queue, and the good stuff will rise to the top.

Absoultely submit articles. I just meant the sort of column we're looking for here, is more of a general thing.
