Rootprompt is featuring a thorough overview of The Alex Catalogue of Electronic Texts. The ACET is an Internet-accessible collection of digital documents created using open source tools. The original Alex Catalogue of Electronic Texts was announced as a gopher services by its creator, Hunter Monroe, in 1994 and was a selection of Gopher links. The Alex Catalogue provides "value-added access to some of the world's great literature."

The catalogue is hosted currently on Solaris but none of the system components are specific to any particular Unix version.

It's a shame that such a rich resource should have such a weak front end. When something that purports to have a collection of documents in English Literature only turns up one entry for the word "eliot", and that entry is "Silas Marner", then I lose a little faith.

This is very cool. I'd like to see people take a system like this and create other catalogs for things like non-western texts, underground literature... perhaps even computer documentation.

Meta-comment about moderation: Smells like a quickie. But I'll vote yes for the general enrichment of the viewing public.
