Version 1.0 of that-other-weblog

I just thought I'd point out that that-other-weblog (Slash, for those of you who've lived under a rock for a couple years ;-)) has hit V.1.0. Here is the list of changes. Hmm, I don't see story moderation in there... :) [editor's note, by rusty] I believe you can actually view stories in the submission queue in slash now, but you still can't vote on them.

Ugh. As much nicer as the discussions are here, this strikes me as an implicit invitation to join the Holy War(tm).

The submission isn't malicious or pointless, but I fear the discussion could be. I just don't see a reason to include it here.

There is no War (4.00 / 1) (#16)
by rusty on Sun Apr 02, 2000 at 03:08:10 PM EST

There is no war, Holy or Un-. Hopefully everyone can see that this is of interest to many readers, as we are weblog folks, many of whom run our own 'logs. Remember, There Is No War. :-)

Remember, There Is No War.

What do you think, you are some kind of Jedi, waving your hands at me?!?

;) j/k Rusty... When you put it that way, I guess this is a worthy story. I suppose I'm guilty of firing shots in the War That Does Not Exist, since I brought it up in the first place. Gosh, I love self-fulfilling prophecies.

Here's to the Webloggers!

BTW, you made me go look for my old copy of 1984 -- you were starting to sound like Big Brother there for a sec...

If you were looking at the webcam, you'd have seen me laughing when I noticed that one spooling in on the logs. These are not the droids you're looking for. :-)

Well, to be fair, it always was. "News for Nerds" is only a catchphrase, anyway. I don't think /. stories have changed much (apart from You-know-who); it's just that the quality of the discussion has nose-dived. Anyway, nice to see that the code is staying out in the open.

I don't know... I would guess anybody who cares about Slashdot already knows about this. Heck, I don't really care about Slash and I know it. Slashdot (the official one) could probably use story moderation, judging by the garbage that's been up there lately. Go take a look at the absolute worst April Fool's Joke I've ever seen.

I tried to use slash at one point. The code was a real mess. I checked it out a couple of times after slashcode was started, but it hadn't really improved much. I'll play around with scoop when I get a chance.

[OT] that-other-weblog's ads (none / 0) (#12)

I noticed this morning that /. is now using ads from DoubleClick, of all places. Anyone know how long this has been going on? I wonder if the YRO folks are aware of this.

I think its pretty lame that you need to attack slash, you all have a great site here, i enjoy reading your news, and slash's. Show some professionality, and quit with the lame attacks.

Re: Version 1.0 of that-other-weblog (none / 0) (#15)
by rusty on Sun Apr 02, 2000 at 03:06:01 PM EST

Eh? Attack? This is a notice that the software's available. I'd consider it more of a promotion than an attack. joeyo pointed out that they haven't implemented story voting, and I clarified that you can allow read-only access to the submission queue, but you can't vote on stories. These are both simply facts, and I didn't think they came off as indictments or attacks. I have no animosity for slash or slashdot. Can't we all just get along? :-)

*Sigh*

I really didn't intend to sound like I was attacking slashdot. Indeed, I'm happy that the Slash code has _finally_ hit 1.0. This is a Good Thing. In fact, until rusty pointed it out, I wasn't aware that the queue box had become browseable. Mainly because:

  1. /. is not running v.1.0 yet or
  2. They have specifically chosen to turn that feature off.

If you can believe me, I was just trying to hype Scoop not belittle Slashdot...

Could this be the cause of IE5 eating cookies? I log in from the main www.kuro5hin.org page, and then clicking "moderate submissions" says "you aren't logged in, log in again"...

but everything works fine in Netscape, and lynx, so it could be a browser bug.
