Slackware updated; BSDi and Walnut Creek to merge

Slackware has updated 7.0 "with the 2.2.14 kernel, XFree86 3.3.6, and a few minor fixes." Get the goodies from the slackware-current directory tree at ftp.freesoftware.com.

Which brings up the second point. (Yes, the URL is correct.) Walnut Creek CD-ROM and BSDI have announced a merger. The plan is to merge the code bases of FreeBSD and BSD/OS as much as possible (basically, this means everything but stuff covered by NDA).

Hm. two semi-unrelated quickies, but both interesting.

But what's this (from the BSD article):

But how friendly is the merger? Look no further than the Principal Architect's chair. David Greenman, who has been Principal Architect for FreeBSD since its inception, and Mike Karels, who holds the position's analogue (Chief Systems Architect) at BSDI, will be co-architects for FreeBSD. This will essentially double the architectural leadership for the project.
That doesn't sound good at all, to me. I predict one of them will be out within 6 months. Didn't they read The Mythical Man-Month? :-)

I'm starting to get pissed off by seeing the same stupid corperate gossip posted here as on slashdot.

And I get bored reading people moaning about an article also being featured on Slashdot.

OTOH, if you're complaining about hearing updates of software/operating systems, etc., then I have a suggestion for Rusty: how about a "New Releases" box, where we could see that a new version of say BIND or sendmail has been released without having to have a (non-)discussion about it. Freshmeat is too full of insignificant programs to trawl through looking for releases.

The BSD news is already on Slashdot... (none / 0) (#2)

The BSD news is already on Slashdot, btw (for those of you who don't read Slashdot, but might want to read the thread there which wasn't infested with trolls for once).

The code bases will be totally merged by FreeBSD 5.0 RELEASE or FreeBSD 6.0 RELEASE, but many of the best bits will be merged sooner. FreeBSD will get better SMP quicker. There will be more developers working on one OS, and there will be better marketing and support behind the OS (provided by BSDI).

A good move for BSD I think - BSDI have released all their code under the BSD license (except for stuff covered by NDA, this is still available as a download though).
