FTC Sues Toysmart.com for Selling Private Data

Let me try this again... As a followup to a story I submitted a couple of weeks ago, "Defunct Dot-Coms Sell "Private" Data", CNNfn is reporting that the Federal Trade Commission is suing Toysmart.com for selling data it told its customers would be kept private. I assume the FTC is doing this to try to set a precedent, and it's one I'd definitely like to see -- when we say we want something kept private, we mean it. Though I don't see what Toysmart really has to lose at this point... they're already dead.

Excellent. It seems the FTC may not be a totally useless &^$(&#^*%, nor TrustE (or however they CaPitAliZe it this week) either. It's good to see both groups getting out and doing their jobs. Three Cheers!

FTC? (none / 0) (#6)

Shouldn't they be fighting for lower taxes for businesses and against consumer rights? What's going on?
I'm so confused...next thing you know, the WTO will be fighting to save the rainforest and MS will put Win2k on cvs. Yikes. Maybe there's something in the coffee.

Maybe there's something in the coffee.

The FDA might investigate, but I'm not holding my breath...

What corps can and can't do (none / 0) (#7)

Though I don't see what Toysmart really has to lose at this point... they're already dead.

That's scary.. I mean, does that mean that if a corporation is going out of business, they can, say, hire a contract killer and face nothing worse than being shut down, which they're already doing? I somehow doubt that that's the case..

Any lawyers here? Can the management of Toysmart be held personally accountable for something like this?
