"One of the world's biggest tobacco companies aims to make billions of pounds from the diseases caused by cigarette smoking through deals with biotech companies for the exclusive rights to market future lung cancer vaccines." Full article in UK Guardian Or read more at genewatch uk

After a little digging, I discovered it actually happened quite some time ago, here is the press release from The biotech company itself It turns out that the pharmaceutical division of Japan Tobacco Inc(JT) is also "currently engaged in the clinical development of anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory agents, among other products, and has launched an anti-HIV drug in Japan. JT presently conducts drug discovery research at its Central Pharmaceutical Research Institute in Osaka, Japan."

at least some money is dumped into research for other topics, other than what they cause.
basically, smokers are paying to 'save' other lives, while they trash theirs. cool.

They're only helping pay for the development of new drugs. The actual health care costs of diagnosing and treating lung cancer will continue to be paid for by Medicare/National Health, insurance, etc. In short, if you're a healthy person, the money to treat the smokers still ultimately comes out of your pocket.

Not only that... (2.33 / 3) (#3)

But according to this article, that money goes right into the companys that produce the killing agents collective pockets. Now this is America for you... Get a bunch of people to pay you to try to kill them, then get the rest of the people to pay you to save the other groups lives, so you can keep trying to kill them.

What a profit model!

I'd "walk a mile for a Camel(tm)" if it could save lives. Now I know my smoking is serving a greater purpose!

You don't get to steal all the deficiency. I want some to.
