Sony recently announced that they will be releasing a Linux kit for the PlayStation 2. News.com reports that the kit will come with a DVD, 40GB hard drive, keyboard and mouse.

They will be including the Linux kernel source on the DVD, however source code for a runtime environment they've created that allows games to be played on the platform seems to remain closed.

Am I the only one who thinks this is about as useful as the Dreamcast keyboard. If you want a games machine you but a games machine. If you want a computer you buy a computer. I can't see any use at all for this, other than to give Sony some free advertising on Slashdot.

How is this even remotely interesting to any but the most 'hardcore' geek? Playstation 2 is for
kicking back after work or school and beating your friends ass at a fun game, not pulling
your hair out in frustration trying to get X configured for your TV screen, compiling a kernel with the right drivers, or some other

And besides, pounding your meat with a club is a very satisfying thing to do :) -- Sleepy

It's not meant as a linux based home computer, it's supposed to be a developer kit similar to the Net Yaroze that Sony marketed with the original playstation.

This is supposed to be a cheap way to get students or even small developers fluent with programming for Sony hardware. Read the frickin' article before you flame.
